One Night  Book Discussion  ST. MAGGIE
Book discussion and book signing at the Parsonage 622 Rosemont-Ringoes Road
                                                  led by Janet Stafford
                                                 January 16th 7:30  PM

Sergeantsville United Methodist Church will be hosting local author Janet Stafford as she leads a discussion of her debut novel, Saint Maggie, on Monday, January 16 at 7:30 p.m.  Saint Maggie tells the story of Maggie Blaine, a widow who runs a rooming house smack dab on the town square of a small New Jersey town in 1860.  Her collection of eclectic boarders and friendship with Nate and Emily, an African-America couple, make her a social outcast.  Fortunately the town doesn’t know that Maggie, Nate, Emily, and Eli Smith (the free-thinking editor of the weekly newspaper) are also involved in the Underground Railroad.  Into her rooming house comes the new Methodist minister, handsome and gifted Jeremiah Madison.  Maggie hopes Jeremiah will revive the little church she attends and provide her boarding house with a bit of badly-needed respectability.  But Jeremiah comes with dark secrets that challenge Maggie’s resolve to love and respect all people.  As the town people reel from a series of shocking events, the compassionate Maggie searches for the truth and struggles to forgive and have faith.  The novel is based on an actual event that occurred in Warren County.

Stafford received her Ph.D. in North American Religion and Culture from Drew University.  She currently serves as the assistant minister at First United Methodist Church in Somerville and teaches part-time in the history department at Kean University. Janet is a former Christian Education Director  of The Sergeantsville United Methodist Church.

Please contact the Rev. Lin Smallwood at Sergeantsville United Methodist to learn more about the Saint Maggie book discussion at 609-397-2333. Books are available on Amazon.com, Kindle, or Squeakingpips.com.
